FAQ.
How do I book an appointment?
Please complete the proposal form below. Be sure to provide clear and detailed reference photos depicting what you have in mind for your design. You can specify elements from each photo that you like such as placement or specific flowers. Please note that while I can work with any references, my style is distinct and consistent - line work and shading are non-negotiable. If you have existing tattoos that need to be considered, please include photos in your proposal. Take well-lit photos with assistance, self-timer, or a mirror to ensure accuracy. Rest assured that I approach tattooing with the utmost care and devote significant time and effort to create a design that harmonizes with your body. The information in the form will be the base of your design so please spend some time finding your reference photo and make sure they align with what you’re proposing.
I treat tattooing with the utmost respect and put a lot of time and energy into making sure your tattoo looks beautiful and lasts a lifetime; I ask that you match this respect by taking the time to find your reference photos and making sure you are serious about getting the tattoo you are proposing.
Appointments will generally be between 11am-5pm and I kindly ask that you block off the day for the tattoo and understand that tattoos require immense amounts of patience throughout the whole process and can not be rushed.
What will you tattoo?
For custom tattoos, I’m open to creating designs based on flash sheets or similar styles. If you have specific requests, like adding or removing elements from a design or incorporating certain flowers, I’m happy to accommodate. However, there are some flower types that may not align with my artistic style, such as carnations, marigolds, dahlias, lupine, and honeysuckle. A $150 Drawing fee will be added to the overall price of all custom tattoos.
Flash Tattoos are pre-drawn designs I have available. You can find examples on my Instagram and my latest available designs on my Instagram. While some flash designs are repeatable, others are one-of-a-kind. Floral designs may be slightly modified for each tattoo while animal and insect motifs may be repeated.
If a flash tattoo ends up requiring many changes to the design and becomes custom, I may require a drawing fee as this additional time is not accounted for in the original cost. My redraw fee is $150.
What will you NOT tattoo?
Please note that I do not tattoo on certain areas such as the neck, face, fingers, and head (including ears and behind the ear). Additionally, I don’t work with geometric designs, simple line work, human portraits or faces, full color tattoos, or birth flower bouquets. While cover-ups are considered on a case-by-case basis, due to my lighter style that incorporates negative space, it may be challenging to completely cover up large/dense/dark tattoos. My goal is to create a tattoo that you will love and that I am proud to have created and for that reason I won’t take on things that aren’t in my skill set.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes, to secure your tattoo appointment, I kindly request a $200 deposit at the time of booking. Please note that this deposit is non-refundable but will be deducted from the total cost on the day of your tattoo session. It serves as a written agreement for the specific design discussed during our consultation. Any changes made to the design after booking may result in appointment cancellation and require a new deposit.
Reschedule and cancelation policy?
The deposit is non-refundable and will be deducted from the total cost on the day of your tattoo session. To ensure a smooth experience, please notify us at least 48 hours in advance if you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment. The deposit is transferable for 2 reschedules with notice. Additional reschedules will require a new deposit. For cancellations or rescheduling within 48 hours, a new deposit is required to secure a new appointment slot.
Late arrival beyond 20 minutes may lead to loss of both deposit and appointment.
Changes made after booking may result in cancellation and forfeiture of the deposit.
Failure to show up for your appointment without prior notice results in a charge of 50% of the service total and prohibits future bookings at Midnight Tattoo.
What if I change my mind about the tattoo before the appointment?
In order for me to provide you with the best tattooing experience, it’s crucial that we are on the same page. If you have a change of heart about your tattoo design before our appointment, please let me know as soon as possible. Minor modifications like switching butterflies usually won’t cause any issues. However, if you want to add elements, change the size or placement significantly, it may impact pricing and possibly require rescheduling. If you decide to completely change your idea, we will need to start the booking process from scratch with a new proposal and deposit. Please keep in mind that once an appointment is confirmed and you alter your design afterwards - there is a chance it may not align with my skill set which can lead to cancellation of your original appointment and deposit forfeiture. Please be sure and ready when you are booking.
When can I see my design?
Design Delivery: Your tattoo design will be sent to you the night before your appointment, giving us an opportunity to discuss any minor changes.
Additional Requests: If there are specific details or requests not covered in your original proposal, please provide reference photos. This ensures that we’re on the same page and can avoid a fee for complete redesign due to missing information.
Tattoo Placement: To maintain harmony with body placement, please inform me of all your desired details beforehand. Changes in tattoo placement may require an entirely new design.
Please keep in mind that designing tattoos takes several hours, so multiple email exchanges for minor adjustments may not be possible. Feel free to communicate any specific requirements upfront. will send over your design the night before the appointment so we can discuss small changes. Please make sure if you are looking for specific things not mentioned in your original proposal you send over more reference photos so we can be on the same page before the design is drawn. If changes requested require a redraw due to specifics not mentioned prior to the design being drawn, I charge a redraw fee of $150.
My goal is for you to love your tattoo and I do not take your trust in me and the fact that it is a permanent mark on your body lightly. I ask that you match my respect for you, your tattoo and your appointment by making sure your provide all the necessary information and reference photos in your proposal.
What are your rates?
When I respond to your proposal I will give you a quote for what the tattoo will cost, based on how long it will take. My rates are generally $200/hr. I require a $150 drawing fee for all custom designs, this is in addition to the hourly rate for your appointment and is due at the time of booking.
How does sliding scale work?
My sliding scale rate is $100/hour for a maximum of 3 hours.
Sliding scale is offered to BIPOC folks because they experience adversity, discrimination, unequal pay and unequal opportunities due to systemic racism. Since I am white, I have certain privilege that has allowed me opportunities POC are typically denied due to the color of their skin. I offer a sliding scale to make my tattoo as accessible as possible. I highly recommend color tests if you are wanting a color tattoo and I do them for free for any client (regardless of skin tone).
There is a general idea that getting tattooed is a luxury but I want to make my art as accessible as possible.
This only applies to tattoos I would normally do, and I can only accept 1-2 sliding scale projects each booking round. I do not require proof of any sort, this is based on trust. Please do not take advantage of this if this does not apply to you, if your skin tone looks like mine, the sliding scale discount will not be applied.
At this time, I am no longer offering sliding scale discounts on full day sessions.
How do you accept payment?
I accept cash or card. A 3% processing fee will be added to all card payments as my prices do not reflect the card fee.
What is the tipping etiquette for a tattoo?
I personally tip 15-20% but it is in no way an obligation, just greatly appreciated.
Where are you located? Is there parking?
The studio is located on 11th and Division in SE Portland. There is on street parking surrounding the building, but many of the spots have a time limit. There are also two paid lots nearby ($4.50-$7.50 for the day via Reef Mobile App). Please make sure you are reading all the signs and giving yourself 10-15 minutes to find parking.
Beware of the evil train that clogs up traffic outside of our building periodically, if you notice a huge line of cars, I recommend parking somewhere in the surrounding neighborhood and avoiding getting stuck in the traffic mess (if possible)!
There is an intercom system to the right of the door and you can use the down arrow button to find midnight tattoo and press call and we will buzz you in.
Here is a video tour of our building that shows exactly how to find us and the parking, if you’re nervous! https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRycqEDg/
(if you don’t have a tik tok account, you won’t be able to watch it 😒)
How can I prepare for the appointment?
To prepare, it is recommended to exfoliate and moisturize the area where you’ll be getting tattooed in the week leading up to your appointment. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and having a nutritious meal before your session is also advised.
Wearing comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the tattooed area is recommended, while avoiding white attire. It’s best not to wear expensive or favorite clothing items as ink stains may occur. Additionally, feel free to bring a clean pillow and blanket for added comfort during longer sessions. It’s always good company bringing podcasts, headphones, books etc as we have stands available for phones or tablets so that you can watch videos or stream entertainment. We do our studio provides a cozy environment.
What if this is my first tattoo?
No problem whatsoever. Please let me know in your proposal so I can be extra thorough and on the day of the appointment I will explain every step to you. I want to make sure you are as comfortable as possible and remember the experience to be a positive one for the rest of your life.
Do you offer touch up services?
Yes, absolutely! Touch-ups are complimentary if the healed tattoo looks drastically different from its fresh appearance. Various factors can affect healing, including aftercare practices and individual immune system responses. Sometimes certain elements of fine line tattoos may fade over time and require refreshing. Elective touch-ups for minor details like veins in a leaf or lightly healed petal outlines cost $50-$150. However, I encourage clients to wait a few years as more touch-up opportunities may arise, but if it bothers you please email me photos to schedule a touch up because I want your tattoo to ensue happiness every time you see it!
I use different values of black to create depth and different styles of shading for varying textures; I do not intend for your tattoo to heal all one tone of black.
Touch ups are $50-$100 if they are deemed elective. This is in regards to minuscule things like a couple veins in a leaf, one petal outline healed light, etc. If the integrity of the tattoo is not effected and that leaf is very clearly still a leaf, I encourage that you wait a few years and maybe you’ll have a couple more things that can be touched up, but if it bothers you please email me photos to schedule a touch up because I want your tattoo to ensue happiness every time you see it!
Can I bring someone with me?
Our studio is cozy and we don’t have room to accommodate additional guests on a regular basis but feel free to ask!
What are you doing to prevent COVID transmission?
Generally, I am only seeing clients who are vaccinated. If you are unable to get vaccinated due to a medical condition we can talk about you getting a covid test no more than 3 days prior to your appointment.
Masks are optional at Midnight since June 2023. If you’d like me to wear one please just let me know. I am still wearing a mask on airplanes, public transit etc.
Please be respectful and let me know if you are feeling unwell and need to reschedule. Being self employed means that I am solely financially responsible for my healthcare, sick days etc.
When will I hear back?
I typically open my books every 2-3 months and post all updates in regards to booking on instagram.
If you don’t hear back, it means I am not able to take on your project. Being one human, I can only work so many days in a month so space is inherently limited. I do my best to prioritize people who have submitted a proposal multiple times.
If you don’t receive a response it is likely that your proposal was lacking sufficient information, the subject matter is not something that is in my skill set, your proposal is TLDR and includes irrelevant information (such as the trauma behind the reason for the tattoo), or your proposal is unclear and leaves me with research to do. For example, if you want to include a flower to symbolize someone’s birth month, please tell me what that flower is, not the month that it is representing.
Please be patient with my response time.
